About Us
Sound Legal Aid is committed to ensuring access to justice for underserved communities across Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Pacific, and Grays Harbor counties. We focus exclusively on civil matters, offering legal education, advice, and limited representation. Recognizing that our clients are often in crisis and vulnerable, we approach each case with sensitivity to their unique situations and legal needs. By leveraging volunteer attorneys and coordinating clinics, we maximize our impact and empower those who need it most.
Sound Legal Aid is a nonprofit organization including a staff of non-attorneys and attorneys. They utilize and leverage resources available, such as volunteer attorneys, contributors, and partner organizations, to deliver curated legal services to community members in need.

History
For more than 40 years, Sound Legal Aid has been a trusted resource for people navigating complex legal challenges. Founded as the Thurston–Mason Pro Bono Project, we began by connecting volunteer attorneys with those in need of legal guidance. Over time, we expanded our services to provide more accessible, compassionate support—offering free legal clinics, partnering with SafePlace to assist survivors of domestic violence, and launching the Housing Justice Project to help individuals and families facing eviction.
As the need for legal assistance grew, we extended our services to Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Lewis Counties. In 2024, we became Sound Legal Aid, a name that reflects our commitment to serving communities across the region. Today, we continue to provide client-centered legal support, recognizing that many of those we serve are experiencing crisis. We work with care and understanding, ensuring that every person is treated with dignity and respect as they navigate their legal options.
